Green Coffee Storage and Container Shipping Guide

Good coffee can arrive damaged when moisture, heat, odours or condensation are poorly controlled. Quality protection starts before loading and continues through the container journey, arrival inspection and warehouse storage.

Specify moisture and packaging

Write the accepted moisture range and measurement method into the specification. ICO guidance commonly references 8–12.5% for ordinary exported green coffee, with identified exceptions such as Indian monsooned coffees. Choose jute bags, food-grade liners or hermetic liners according to value, route and risk.

Inspect the container before loading

The container should be dry, clean, odour-free and structurally sound. Check floors, doors, seals and signs of previous contamination. Use suitable dry protection and loading patterns, but do not treat desiccants as a substitute for properly dried coffee and sound packaging.

Check arrival and warehouse conditions

Record seal condition and photograph the load before unloading. Isolate wet, torn or suspicious bags and compare arrival samples with the approved reference. Store coffee off the floor, away from walls, chemicals, strong odours, sunlight and unstable humidity.

Buyer checklist

  • Define moisture method and acceptance limits
  • Approve bag and liner construction
  • Inspect and photograph the empty container
  • Retain shipment and arrival samples

Storage specifications must reflect the coffee, route and local food-safety rules. Confirm current requirements before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Do hermetic liners guarantee quality?

No. They reduce moisture and oxygen exchange but cannot repair coffee loaded too wet or contaminated.

Should damaged bags be mixed with the shipment?

No. Segregate them, document the condition and investigate before releasing the coffee.
